Hiking in Lura Lakes and Alps of Albania tour


This is an interesting tour in Lura and in Alps of Albania, in 9 days, exploring the nature monuments and the Peaks of Accursed Mountains in Albania, a small country with an ancient history and impressive geographic diversity. Some highlights of the tour are: The Castle of Scanderbeg and the old Bazaar in Kruja ;  The Alpine Lura Lakes – seven glacial lakes ; The ottoman neighborhood of Prizren, Kosovo; The Valbona  and Thethi Valleys - the fantastic alpine valleys; The  Rozafa Castle in Shkodra


Day 1  Welcome to Albania-Kruja, the holy mountain of Sarisalltik

Arrival in Kruja. At 18:00, meeting the tour guide at the hotel lobby. Flight arrival permitting, it is possible to make a short hike on the ridge of Mt. Kruja and visit the cave of the Bektashi Dervish (a Sufi sect well established in Albania).  Dinner and overnight in Kruja

Day 2  Kruja – Lura National Park

After enjoying the breakfast, visit the old bazaar and the castle of Scanderbeg. Kruja is known as hometown of Albanian’s National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Whilst the old bazaar is one of Albania’s largest handicrafts market. This bazaar has operated since the 15th century. After lunch, our tour will head northeast to the National Park of Lura, which is distinguished for its 14 glacial lakes, where 7 of these are known as the Seven Blue Eyed, green eye lashed lakes of Lura, due to their stunning beauty. Dinner and overnight in Lura.

Day 3  The Seven Blue Eye lashed lakes of Lura

After breakfast, a short transfer will bring us to the field of the Mares (1580m a.s.l) and seven amazing lakes, the most beautiful sites of National Park of Lura. The field of the Mares is located in the southern part of the park. It has an alpine meadow of a unique beauty with an area of 18ha, replacing a now dry glacial lake. The park has 14 glacial lakes overall, and seven of these are known as the Seven Blue Eyed, Green eye lashed lakes remaining full of water throughout the year. The most beautiful lakes are the Lake of Flowers (1585m a.s.l), Kallabas Lake (1575m a.s.l), the Black Lake (1620m a.s.l), the lake of Slates (1600m a.s.l), Hoti Lake (1500m a.s.l). All lakes of Lura Park are abundant with a diverse environment and form a classic alpine lake eco system with a rare beauty.The picnic lunch will be under fresh shadow pines and beautiful birds’ songs. Overnight at the same guesthouse in Lura.

Day 4  Travelling towards the Valbona Valley through Prizren - Kosovo

After breakfast we take the National Road through the scenic mountain landscape and cross the border into Kosovo and going to Prizren where we have time for lunch. This afternoon we continue our journey and pass through the small town of Bajram Curri, as we enter the picturesque Valbona Valley. We check-in to a guesthouse located in the centre of the valley, amidst the jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains and enjoy the afternoon exploring the village on foot.

Day 5  Shepherds trail through the Eastern Albaian Alps

The trekking will start from the house in direction of the village of Kukaj (900m), here we can visit few village houses. From there, a shepherd’s path will bring us to remote landscapes of the eastern Alps of Albania and it can go up until reaching the shepherds huts at (1600m). The path climbs smoothly in the middle of green meadows, water streams and forests, with gorgeous views of Jezerca Mountain and Rrethi i Bardhë - The White Circle. The duration of the trip is about 7 hours. Well-trod mountain path. At the end of the day, after the descend, we will arrive at the same guesthouse where will have the traditional dinner.

Day 6  The Valbona pass

Today we will hike the most classic pass of the Albanian Alps; for centuries it has linked the two most well-known valleys of the area, Valbona (Valbona pass; 1966m a.s.l) and Thethi. We will use horses to carry the luggage to the next house. Highlanders from late spring use the path daily, until the first snow of winter. Several springs of water will make for pleasant and refreshing rest stops to admire the steep and jagged surrounding peaks of Jezerca and Radohima. After reaching the Valbona pass we will start the descent towards the village of Thethi (850m a.s.l), which is the best-preserved alpine village in Albania. It has typical houses still roofed with wooden tiles and its mountain valley location is spectacular. We will stay overnight and have dinner in one of these traditional houses and experience the unforgettable hospitality of the hosts.

Day 7  Exploring Thethi Valley

Today we will have a pleasant day exploring the surroundings of Thethi. We will start walking downhill from the house (850m), and visit the attractions near the village. These include the Church (750m), the Kulla e Ngujimit (a tower house used in the past by men as a shelter against on-going vendetta), the Thethi Waterfall, Grunasi Canyon, and the cyclopean stone walled terraces dating from the late bronze era, recently discovered in 2007. We will stay overnight and have dinner at the same guesthouse.

Day 8  Visit Rozafa Castle - travel to Tirana

After breakfast, we drive to Shkodra through the scenic mountain landscape. We will stop in Shkodra to visit the Rozafa Castle and have the lunch also. Our journey will continue toTirana the capital of Albania. Later this afternoon we will take an escorted walking tour of the government buildings and the mosque, ending with an optional visit to visit the sky tower where we can enjoy the wonderful views of the city. Dinner and overnight in Tirana

Day 9  Leaving Albania
